to Prepare Construction & Demolition Waste Assessment
Update for Wake County, NC
(Fairfax, VA – November
26, 2007) – Gershman, Brickner & Bratton,
Inc. (GBB) announced today that it has contracted with the
Solid Waste Management division of the Environmental Services
department of Wake County, NC, to provide a strategic review
of the handling, recycling and disposal of construction waste
and demolition debris (C&D) generated in the County.
As part of the assignment, funded by
both the County and the City of Raleigh, GBB will interview
private sector participants in the C&D industry, including home builders, commercial
generators, haulers, recyclers, reuse centers and public
sector interests in providing this strategic review. GBB
will also review C&D waste generated in the County and
provide information on the collection, recycling system tipping
fees and C&D landfill costs. The final report is to include
key requirements and impacts of several C&D recycling
model ordinances used around the country. Additionally, GBB
will research and provide benchmark information on other
communities that have successful C&D programs with and
without regulatory requirements.
“This is an update to the C&D Waste Assessment
that GBB prepared for Wake County back in 2004,” noted
Bob Brickner, GBB Executive Vice President. “We are
excited about the opportunity to work closely again with
the County and the City of Raleigh, look at disposal and
recycling options for C&D material, and help define what
has happened to C&D recycling levels in the County over
the past three years with strictly private initiatives in
play.”
“GBB’s assessment will provide us with a better
understanding of the generation, disposal and diversion of
C&D materials in Wake County,” said Jim Reynolds,
Solid Waste Director for Wake County. “The information
gathered will be used to evaluate current C&D initiatives
and to plan for future programs.”
Wake County is the second-most populous County in North
Carolina with a population of more than 817,000 residents.
The County consists of 12 municipalities and includes Raleigh,
the county seat and state capital, and one corner of the
Research Triangle that includes Durham and Chapel Hill. The
County, with a unique mix of urban and rural small towns,
is consistently rated as one of the best places to live and
work in America.
GBB has been active in the C&D processing/recovery field
since 1992. Two of its very first assignments were
participating in a C&D recycling plan for the Government
of Hong Kong, and preparing a C&D Waste Primer for the
Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA). In
1993 and 1994, GBB helped develop, managed, and had prime
speaking spots at the first two national C&D conferences.
Mr. Brickner was the leader behind these early activities
and, 15 years later, continues as GBB’s national spokesman
on C&D issues ranging from quantification to facility
implementation strategies. Over the past 15 years,
GBB has performed over 130 C&D related project activities
for clients, ranging from full-scale feasibility studies
to project procurement/implementation assistance.
