Assisting Rivanna Solid Waste Authority with Strategic
Plan
Authority Banking on GBB’s National Expertise
and In-Depth Local Knowledge
(Fairfax, VA – December
3, 2007) - Gershman, Brickner & Bratton,
Inc. (GBB) announced that it has contracted with the Rivanna
Solid Waste Authority (RSWA) in Virginia to develop a solid
waste strategic plan. The GBB Project Team is providing
a critical review of facilities and services; interviewing
stakeholders; reviewing growth projections and analyzing/forecasting
the effects on long term solid waste management; reviewing
existing and potential solid waste facilities in the jurisdiction;
comparing solid waste programs to other similar communities;
preparing public meetings; proposing alternatives; and
developing implementation plans.
“We are very pleased with the opportunity to work
with GBB, and we feel we will benefit significantly from
their experience and credibility in the solid waste industry,” stated
Tom Frederick, Executive Director of the RSWA. “There
are demands in our community for more reuse and recycling
alternatives as well as pressures to control costs, and it
will take expertise such as GBB offers to strike the right
balance.”
“While we are a national firm, GBB has worked extensively
in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia since
its incorporation in 1980, and we have been significantly
involved in helping to shape the solid waste management landscape
throughout the Mid-Atlantic region,” noted Harvey Gershman,
GBB President. “This is an exciting opportunity to
assist other communities in the Mid-Atlantic area and use
the in-depth knowledge and understanding of the RWSA situation
that we already possess, having assisted them in the late ‘90s
to evaluate alternative scenarios of using existing capacity
at the landfill and privatizing disposal services for construction
and demolition debris and solid waste.”
Joining GBB, for this project, is Virginia-based
Draper Aden Associates (DAA), which is assisting by bringing
specialized experience assessing operating solid waste
management facilities.
The RSWA was formed in 1990 as a political subdivision of
the Commonwealth of Virginia to handle solid waste disposal
and recycling activities in the City of Charlottesville and
the County of Albemarle, a region located approximately 115
miles southeast of Washington, DC with a combined population
of 114,200 people. The RSWA operates three facilities in
the Charlottesville / Albemarle area: the McIntire Road Recycling
Center, the Material Utilization Center and the Paper Sort
Facility. The RSWA is governed by a five-member Board of
Directors, and its business mission is to provide cost effective
services to both the County and City that facilitate the
transportation of solid waste to market for reuse and recycling,
or to landfill disposal, as appropriate.
GBB is a national solid waste management consulting firm
founded in 1980 that works on solid waste collection, processing,
recycling and disposal issues, and assists in planning, procuring,
and implementing sound, cost-effective facilities and services
at the local, state and national levels for both the public
and private sectors. For more information on the firm and
