Rivanna Solid Waste
Authority Holding Community Meetings
GBB Assisting Authority with
Strategic Plan
On November 15, 2007, at a community
meeting for the residents of Charlottesville and Albemarle County,
Virginia, GBB staff presented the findings of their in-depth assessment
of the facilities and services operated by the Rivanna Service
Authority (RSWA), which provides solid waste services to 132,000
City and County residents. The community
meeting was a key element in the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority’s
strategic planning process for which GBB serves as the Authority’s
solid waste consultant.
During the strategic planning process,
GBB conducted a critical review of the RSWA’s services and
facilities; personally interviewed more than 50 community stakeholders;
held discussions with the RSWA Citizens Advisory Committee; and
conducted data and document review, a detailed technical evaluation,
and benchmarking with five communities that are similar in one
or more ways to the Charlottesville area. GBB also developed
a public opinion survey asking residents to provide their suggestions
for improvements to current facilities and services.
During the
November 15 and December 4 community meetings, GBB staff presented
the findings of their assessment and discussed a number of options
for improving the trash and recycling system in the Authority’s
service area. Following the two meetings, GBB will
draft a report for the RSWA Board of Directors, elected officials,
and University officials, which is intended to lead to public discussions
and decisions toward new expectations for RSWA.
